Shepherding Horses is a small self-book that is basically for Pastors for preparing & training the Wild Stallions/Horses which are the Leaders in The Church. It's truly an amazing book for Pastors but might not be a good experience for the Leader's as it talks about some characteristics of a wild horse but on the contrary, it also helps a Leader to know himself & the patterns which one can fall into during her Ministry Life & in fact it can equip a leader to become an efficient leader even without being a Pastor.
The Book starts with the depiction of a Shepherd which a Pastor, a small group of Horses which is are Leaders ,and then Sheep's which are Believers. It talks further about the Characteristics of a Wild Horse who is compared to a Leader who is always excited, energetic has influence in Church & Market place and then the focus shifts to why training that Horse is necessary rather than getting rid of it. Then it talks about how a Pastor can train him and along with other Horses but not more than 12 at once. It also talks focuses on The Earthly Ministry life of Jesus and how He used different techniques to train his apostles to spread The Gospel.
The Book talks about some of the characteristics of a Horse which are as follows:
1) They are Self Sufficient
Workplace leaders easily rely on their own strength, they depend less on God's Strength so God needs to break them to bring them to submission and to make them to be disciplined.
2) They are affected by Pagans Marketplace
3)They are Strong & Fearless in Battle
4) They create False Hopes
They represent Man's Effort instead of God's Provision
What did Jesus do to train his horses?
1) He told everyone to respond to the Good News
2) He taught many to understand God's Principles
3) He trained some to do the work
4) He equipped few to reproduce
5) He modeled a relationship with The Father.
Peter was probably Jesus' Consummate Horse as he was focused, not afraid to voice, strongly opinionated, a man of action, acted fearlessly. Jesus did the following things
1) He first called Peter
2) He taught him
3) Jesus let Peter get close to him personally
4) Jesus was infinitely patient
5) Jesus expressed a vision for what Peter would become
6) Jesus praised Peter when appropriate & chastised him when necessary
7) Jesus efforts with Peter produced multiplication of His ministry.
Book talks about the Four Ways that Leader Grow Spiritually
1) Time Alone with God
2) Having a Role Model
3) Small Accountability Group
4) Encouragement of Family or Friends
The Six Steps for Equipping Leaders
1) Call them into a personal relationship with you
2) Create an Atmosphere of Understanding with them
a) Ask them how you can help them to minister in the workplace where God has placed you.
b) Be a Facilitator, not someone who is always a Preacher.
c) Set Agenda according to their needs & difficulties
d) look for one who has a heart for God & people and is teachable.
3) Affirm them in their Workplace Calling
4) Equip them as Ministers in the Workplace
Send them as Missionaries in the marketplace & ask them what is God speaking to you about? Teach them the difference in Church Work(draining for horses) & Work for Church( is to bring people to Christ & see them grow to maturity).
5) Commission them as World Ambassadors for Christ.
6) Release them for service in their own sphere of Influence
One thing I personally liked was why it is important for a Leader to be broken down and slowed down and how it shows an example of Paul, that how God did this with him, and how God raised him up after that.
